Based in Sydney, Mark has trained in various martial arts for over 35 years.
Mark’s primary martial art is traditional Japanese karate, currently holding the rank of 4th dan Renshi under Kancho Ino Macquaring in Jin Sei Ryu Karate, which has it’s roots in full-contact Kyokushin Karate. Mark has trained in Australia and New Zealand under many well known martial artists, including Hanshi Renzie Hanham, 8th degree Seido Juku Karate.
“After a stint of several years as door security at a busy nightclub in the 90's it became clear to me that the transition from dojo to street required skills that most traditional martial arts clubs did not train to deliver or defend, and I needed to know more."
Looking for complimentary skills, Mark trained in Kwan Nyam Hapkido, where he currently holds the rank of 1st kyup brown belt under Grandmaster Geoff Booth, who has refined his skills and system as a member of the Guardian Angels in Los Angeles, patrolling streets and subways as citizen security. GM Geoff regularly tours the world conducting training for martial arts clubs, law enforcement and military in a wide range of skills and techniques.
After the London Bridge terrorist knife attack Mark started thinking about the utility of knife defences taught by most traditional martial arts schools, and in pursuit of a greater understanding of the world of knives he began training in edged weapons with Guro Raymond Floro, archivist of Kalis Illustrisimo, in Floro Fighting Systems (FFS).
Guro Ray is also a former Guardian Angels member, and has spent his life studying many fighting systems, specialising in edged weapons, constantly refining FFS. He is a recognised world-wide authority on edged weapon fighting and defence, with many law enforcement, military and first responder organisations utilising FFS as part of their training regimen. Mark is a Certified Level One Instructor in FFS.
Coming to Kinetic Fighting, (KEF-IC) Mark found the practical approach and skills grounded in reality taught by founder Paul Cale and the KEF-IC system finally brought all this together into a well rounded methodology to survive a violent encounter.
Paul’s extensive experience in the battlefield, as a Special Forces operator with five deployments to combat zones, brings skills hard-earned in real world hand to hand combat that are rare in martial arts today.
Paul has been involved in combat sports and martial arts since the early 1980s and holds black-belt ranks in a number of different systems. These include Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), Kudo Daido Juku, Kyokushin karate and three aikido styles, as well as the Olympic combat sports of judo and taekwondo. Paul was the first Australian to earn a Kudo black belt and was the first branch chief of the International Kudo Federation Australia (IKFA). He now runs his own independent martial arts training and assessment body, Jissen Budo International, with branches around Australia and in Asia.
Mark is licensed as a Certified Instructor under Paul in KEF-IC from the first cohort of civilian instructors to complete the program.
With many years of experience as an instructor, Mark’s teaching style is detailed and pragmatic, designed to be appropriate for the size, age and skill level of all participants.
